Raheem Phipps wins Inaugural T-Shirt Design Challenge

Basseterre, St. Kitts, May 08, 2014 (SKNIS): The design for the 31st Annual Summer Residential Camp was unveiled on Wednesday (May 07) and its creator Raheem Phipps, 11, was recognized at a ceremony at the Irish Town Primary School.

The design was chosen from a number of entries that were submitted as part of the inaugural competition for the Department of Youth Empowerment’s camp. Competition coordinator Suelika Creque said that submissions were invited from primary and secondary school students and a team of persons deemed the design by Mr. Phipps the best. It depicts various aspects of camp in keeping with the theme; “Securing Our Future with Creativity and Fun.”

Adrian Webster of Gamer’s Lounge – a new local youth and family entertainment company – presented the sixth grade student with a Sony Playstation 3 Uncharted 3 Bundle. He said that his company was proud to partner in this initiative as it highlights the commitment to the development of young people.

Phipps was also presented a gift voucher from Harper’s Office Depot and free registration to the summer camp. In addition to being printed on the camp t-shirts, the design will be featured on the banner and other camp related material.

The young man thanked the Department of Youth Empowerment for the opportunity to contribute to the national development programme which serves some 250 young persons yearly. He encouraged peers to get involved in activities such as this which encourage creative expression and productive use of their skills.

Runners up of the competition include Trudella Spencer, T-Shuni Zakers and Keyshawn Jones of the Verchild’s High School, Milano Welcome of Cayon High and Tajell Herbert also of Irish Town Primary. They each will receive gift vouchers from Harper’s.

Ms. Creque expressed heartfelt appreciation to Harper’s Office Depot and Gamers Lounge, who “came onboard early and remained committed to making this T-Shirt Design Challenge a success.”
