Rain saves Nevis’ Blushes
Sports Page — The one day match in the Leeward Islands tournament was played between Antigua and Barbuda and Nevis at the ET Willet Park on Sunday 12th October.
Sylvester BOUNCING Joseph won the toss for the visitors and immediately decided to bat first.
Austin Richards Jr then led an unprecedented if not unprovoked assault on the Nevisian bowlers, playing a series of scintillating shots all around the ET Willet Park.
There was one particular over that really caused the small crowd in attendance to sit up.
The over was bowled by the aggressive Leeward Islands under 19 fast bowler, Colin Kezron Archibald.
The first ball was dismissively deposited way over long off for four. The second, was the natural pace bowler’s response: A short ball which was dispatched towards the Western Stands for a maximum. The third, was driven for another boundary. The fourth, was a well directed bouncer and Richards swayed his head out of the way. The fifth, was another well directed bouncer and Richards belatedly decided to duck with his bat raised above his head. The ball struck the bat and spooned in the air but a diving Justin Athanaze at first slip, just could not pull it in.
The final delivery was another snorter but Richards was waiting for it. He rocked back onto the back foot and heaved majestically. This time clean over the Western stand for another maximum. He had indeed won the battle.
A more sedate Mali Richards perished with the score on 47 for just 7 runs but Orlando Peters in joining Austin Richards, also played some superlative shots.
At about a quarter to the midday hour, a down pour of rain halted play.
When the showers eased, the umpires completed an inspection and the covers were removed to reveal that the pitch was very much intact, despite the soggy outfield.
Within five minutes however, the covers had to be hastily replaced as an even harder downpour swept through the ET Willet Park.
This time, there was no removing of the covers, the umpires eventually called off the game which ended in a no result.
Summarized scores: Antigua and Barbuda 141 for 1 from 23 overs: Austin Richards Jr 88* and Orlando Peters 39*
Justin Athanaze got the lone wicket to fall.
