Repairs to College Street

Basseterre, St. Kitts, August 1, 2012 — The Public Works Department is conducting speedy repairs on College Street which collapsed yesterday during heavy rains and flooding.

Public Works Chief Road Engineer Kevin Williams is hoping for fair weather as they work.

In explaining how the road collapsed Mr. Williams said that they started some work last week Thursday to channel the water properly in the ghaut but got caught with the rain on Monday and Tuesday which caused water to seep through and erode the base of the road resulting in the collapse.

Noting forecasts of an approaching weather system Mr. Williams says they will accelerate the work.

The department started repairs on the road on Tuesday and is aiming to complete the repairs by Thursday, as we await the possible approach of a tropical system on Friday.
