SKN joins globe in observation of International Women’s Day 2019
(ZIZ News) – St. Kitts and Nevis has joined the globe in observing International Women’s Day 2019.
International Women’s Day is celebrated each year on March 8.
In her address to the nation, Minister of State responsible for Gender Affairs, Honourable Wendy Phipps, said statistics show that a significant number of women continue to tackle greater roles in our families, communities and local economy.
She said that the government has taken note of the continued impact of crime on the women of our nation, and explained that a higher percentage of women are violently attacked or assaulted in domestic disputes.
However, she explained that the recent statistic show significant improvement than that of 2017.
Minister Phipps said that the scourge of domestic disputes continues to be a major issue for the department of Gender Affairs and the nation but explained that the ministry has set out to implement several programmes to help solves these issues.
She said these include Anger Management sessions and Gender Sensitization workshops.
The minister of state also encouraged persons to cover the mothers of both victims and perpetrators of youth and gang violence in prayer and intercession.
A month of celebrations will include the annual International Women’s Day Award Ceremony on March 8, Distribution of Care Packages to females at Her Majesty’s Prison on March 11, Presentations in schools on March 15; and a one day Post-Launch Consultation on the Domestic Violence Complaints and Response Protocol on March 21.
