SKNLP Leader announced the NextGen SKN fiscal stimulus program
Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 3, 2020 (ZIZ News): Leader of the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party, Dr. Denzil Douglas made several announcements during the party’s virtual public meeting on Monday regarding their initial plans, if they are elected into power.
He explained that the announcements are all part of the NextGen Fiscal Stimulus Programme which are solutions aimed at “bringing relief to the financial burdens of the workers, pensioners, students and small businesses which have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.”
“We believe that the government must specifically introduce policy initiatives, initiatives which are aimed at stimulating demand and generating sufficient business for enterprises to justify re-employing the workers that were laid off during the height of the pandemic.”
Among some of the initiatives announced by Dr. Douglas were paying an honorarium to Covid-19 frontline workers and increasing the monthly stipend to workers who have lost their jobs as a result of Covid-19.
” We shall pay an honorarium of 2 month’s salary to all COVID-19 frontline workers including all nurses, policemen and other medical and security personnel, all security personnel including our soldiers in camp and out of camp as well,” he said. Dr. Douglas contnued, “we shall increase the monthly stipend to workers who have lost their jobs as a result of COVID-19 from the $1,000 per month that has been announced by this government to $1560 per month.”
Dr. Douglas concluded by stating that the NextGenSKN has already begun work in developing a long-term economic recovery programme with a view to correcting any long-term structural damage to the economy that may have been caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
