St. Kitts-Nevis farmers and fisher folk allowed to work on partial curfew days to boost food security

Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 15, 2020 (ZIZ News): Farmers and fisherfolk in St. Kitts and Nevis will be given the opportunity to work on their trade during partial curfew days while the federation remains in a State of Emergency.

This was revealed by Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Dr. Hon. Timothy during Wednesday’s national address.

He said this was decided after his government listened intently to the views of farmers and fisher folks.

“We have noted the advice that farming in small islands generally involves a small number of persons on each farm, making it easier for social distancing to apply. In this regard, farmers and fishers will be allowed to engage in their trade during the period 6:00am to 4:00pm on partial curfew days and on such terms and conditions as the Commissioner of Police may determine during the 24-hour lockdown”, Dr. Harris explained.

Prime Minister Harris said this is important considering that food security is critical to life and living and added that that while adequate food and beverage arrives in St. Kitts and Nevis weekly, it is in the government’s national interest to have adequate local produce, including supplies of fruits and vegetables.
