St. Kitts Welcomes another Centenarian

(ZIZ News) – Cardin Home resident, Una Duporte is 100 years old and on Saturday, her family members, friends and government officials celebrated with her.

Among the officials was Minister of State in the Ministry of Social Services, the Hon. Wendy Phipps.

“I just wanted to congratulate you on attaining the age of 100. It is a milestone and privilege that many people don’t get to see and it is something that we have to be proud of anytime anyone of our citizens reaches that great milestone because it is a sign to us of a life well lived and about having good health and wholeness and we wish you all the best on this your birthday and we hope that we can come back to see you for other birthdays beyond this one,” she said.

Minister Phipps said she was encouraged by the increase in the number of residents reaching the 100 year milestone.

“This trend that we have in terms of having people attain the age of 100, it’s a trend that has been developing because I know in the past it was very rare that you have somebody living long enough to reach 100 but we had people in the Federation who have gotten to that age,” she said, noting “we are hoping more of the men reach that age. We have two who we are watching carefully hoping that they get there.”

Several well-wishers also stopped by to wish the new centenarian a happy birthday.

Duporte was born on November 14th 1915.

ZIZ News understands that the oldest resident of St. Kitts and Nevis is a 104 year old woman who resides at The Grange.
