St. Kitts Wins First Round at Debating Competition

(ZIZ News) — St. Kitts’ debating team won the first round of debates at the Leeward Islands Debating Competition 2016 currently being held in St. Maarten.

Team St. Kitts came up against team BVI on Friday to debate the moot “The free movement of CARICOM nationals is a net positive for the Caribbean region.”

The debating team comprised of leader Kaylor Bass and seconder Leantel Matthew Heyligar who amassed 137 points just ahead of BVI’s 136 points.

Kaylor Bass was also named Best Speaker for the debate.

Team St. Kitts was next scheduled to face Antigua, on Saturday night proposing the moot, “The popularity of skin lightening is testament to the racism/colourism that plagues Caribbean society.”

St. Maarten newspaper, The Daily Herald has reported that approximately 50 students taking part in the Leeward Islands Debating Competition took ill during the debate at Sonesta Maho Beach Hotel and Casino on Friday evening and were taken to the hospital.
