Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 28, 2020 (ZIZ News):The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) is asking all households to assist in efforts to help curb the spread of the Coronavirus by responsibly disposing of waste that may have been contaminated by the virus.

During Sunday’s NEOC daily briefing at NEMA, the SWMC’s General Manager, Keithley Phillip said this is necessary considering that the Corporation has seen an increase in waste disposal from households since the government implemented State of Emergency.

“There has been an increase in the waste generated. As a result of that, we are asking householders to be responsible as they put out their waste for collection. Please, double wrap all your bags that may contain COVID-19 safety activities[materials]. The paper that is used to dry your hands etc or the empty sanitization bottles, please double wrap these items as you put them out”, he said.

Mr. Phillip used the opportunity to make a strong appeal to those persons who are still discarding waste by placing plastic bags on the street.

“There are some who have the tendency of just resting plastic bags at the side of the road. Can I encourage you not to do that? It puts additional stress and risks on the workers who are already doing a difficult job”, the General Manager explained.

He said that the Solid Waste Management Corporation will continue to adhere to all regulations put in place to fight the spread of the Novel Coronavirus.
