ZIZ Newsroom, Basseterre, February 8 2012: Prime Minister the Right Hon Dr Denzil Douglas says the government is currently discussing ways of breathing new life into the sugar factory.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, “Ask The Pm”, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Douglas said one idea is to turn the site into a museum.

“We speak of the site as a potential for a sugar museum,” he said. “And that is something that is high on the agenda of the government. Of course it needs financing, and that is something that needs to be worked out in terms of getting that project off.”

He said they have also discussed using it as a site for the national archives. But in the meantime, the building is being used as part of an industrial park.

“We have a manufacturing plant that is producing windows and glass and so forth,” he said. “They are using the old factory site as well for manufacturing purposes. So already it is a multi-faceted use that we are putting that particular site towards,” he added.

Dr Douglas says the government recognizes the role the sugar factory has played in the development of the country and they need to ensure it is enhanced.
