The Legacy goes on

CricketFilePhotoGSports Page — When it comes to the game of Cricket, Nevis has established a strong legacy. For a small island and population, Nevis has produced an astonishing number of international cricketers viz Elquemedo Willet; Derrick Parry; Keith Arthurton; Stuart Williams; Carl Tuckett; Runarko Morton and Kieran Powell.

Nevis also has the distinction of producing the first player from the Leeward Islands to make it into the West Indies team, in Elquemedo Tonito Willet.

Currently Stuart Williams is serving as the Asst. coach to the senior West Indies team which has gone off to India and Virgil Browne, a former Leeward Islands leg spinner is now serving as the team’s Massage therapist. Carl Tuckett is also slowly but surely making waves as a regional umpire and it is hoped that one day soon he will be chosen to stand in the international arena.

But it does not end there. The legacy continues…

Nevis has just sent a young team off to Montserrat to play their first game of the Leeward Islands tournament and the players included in the team, speak volumes to the talent within certain families and throughout the island as a whole.

The captain of the team, Tonito Willet at just 31 years of age, is the senior statesman in the team and his brother Akito Willet who is just 26 is also one of the older players in the team. Both are sons of the great Elquemedo Willet and both are talented with both bat and ball.

Ross Powell, who is set to make his debut, has made waves at the regional under 17 and under 19 tournaments. He is the son of Ronald Powell, former Leeward Islands allrounder and former President of the Nevis Cricket Association.

Philo Wallace, a youthful off spinning allrounder, is the son of former Nevis and Leewards speedster, Raphael Wallace.

Saeed Williams, an aggressive young opening batsman, is the son of Stuart Williams.

Adelvin Phillip is the nephew of two former outstanding Nevisian wicket keeper batsmen, in Johnson Morton and Ray Phillip while Kejel Tyson is the nephew of former Nevisian and Leewards top order batsman, Clifford BOMBO Walwyn.

Youthful wicketkeeper/batsman Dymon Parris is the nephew of the late Mac Parris, a former outstanding wicket keeper/batsman for Nevis.

Kezron Archibald is the nephew of former Nevis speedster, Sylvester Browne and former lion hearted opening batsman for Nevis, Bernette NUTSY/BUFFALO SOLDIER Thompson.

Theron Bussue is the nephew of former Nevis cricketers, Lewis Newton and Sydney Newton

It’s a young team with Justin Athanaze at age 25 and most of the other players are under the age of 23 and quite a number of them are teenagers.

And so, the legacy continues and without a doubt, the Nevis cricketing factory will continue to produce international stars in the near to distant future.
