Top Netballers clash while Squash players battle for glory in at OECS Sporting events this weekend

Castries Saint. Lucia, Thursday May 20th, 2010 – Sports in the OECS will be heightened as the week closes with two (2) major sporting events in our Member States.

The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis will be infected with netball fever as the 2010 COURTS OECS Club Netball Championships takes place from May 19 – 24. The champion clubs from our member states are willing and ready to do battle in what is expected to be a very keenly contested competition.

Speaking on the OECS News Link’s Sports Connection ( on Wednesday, head of the OECS Sports Desk Denis James says despite Saint Lucia’s dominance of the event one should not take the other competing clubs for granted this year.

Even though one is convinced that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis will converge on Netball City, it will still help to urge the netball public to come out in droves to support every match of this COURTS OECS Champion of Champions Club Netball Tournament.

While the girls do battle in Basseterre at Netball City, the OECS “Squashers” will be hammering it out at the Saint Lucia Racquet Club in the OECS Senior Squash Championships.

This year the Senior OECS Squash championships will comprise of both individual and team championships i.e. two tournaments in one weekend. The tournament will include individual matches for two days while the other two days will feature team championships. St. Vincent and the Grenadines as well as the British Virgin Islands have confirmed full team participation while Dominica will field only a men’s team.

Each full team is made up of four men, three ladies, three male veterans (over 40, over 50 and over 60 years) and two female veterans (over 40 and over 50).

Sponsorship has been very difficult this year. However, the Saint Lucia Squash Association is extremely grateful to: the Department of Youth & Sports as a gold sponsor, Cap Maison as a Bronze Sponsor, Rockstar distributed by Renwick & Co as a bronze sponsor, Dominos Pizza as a bronze sponsor and the National Lottery for its contribution to the local team.
