Traffic Lights Installation Update

Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 2nd, 2021 (ZIZ News)  The traffic lights at Wellington Road and the College Street Ghaut have now been mounted however they will not be utilized until installations are completed in March.

In an interview with ZIZ news, Traffic Light Specialist, Franklin Manhertz explained that the lights being installed are more advanced with different poles and push button signs.

He compared the installation method used to the old ones noting that the installation for the new lights uses a larger foundation.

“The foundation is larger than the ones before. These foundations are about six feet deep, they took about two and a half yards of concrete for each one. The first one would take up just about a yard of concrete for each one of the foundation. These are very large foundation compared to before.”

Manhertz said the poles are higher than usual and can accommodate the passage of tall vehicles.

“They’re way higher than normal, the international standard is about 17feet 6 from the surface of the road to the bottom of the signal but these are a little bit higher. Preparation maybe for when you have your carnival and the big boxes can pass under them very easy.”

He said the lights are outfitted with uninterruptible power supply systems or UPSs in the event there is a power outage which will last for 3 to 4 hours until power is restored.
