UMOJA Brings Dance Unity

ZIZ News– July 22, 2013- A local dance tutor feels he has brought the dance community closer together after concluding his week long African dance and drumming workshop.

The goal of the workshop was to embody the spirit of UMOJA, or Unity.

The sessions ended with a performance and awards ceremony on Saturday at the Youth and Community Center where the dancers and drummers got a chance to show off their talents.

But tutor, Alphonso Henry says the workshop was about more than just dancing. He says as UMOJA means unity, he wanted to bring dancers from all walks of life together to celebrate with each other.

Henry hopes to continue this workshop every year. He hopes the dancers would go back to their groups and teach their fellow performers what they’ve learned and keep the spirit of African dance alive.
