Water month of activities ends with hike

(ZIZ News) — The Water Services Department culminated its month of activities with a field trip to the Wingfield water intake on Saturday.

Acting Manager and Water Engineer Dennison Paul in explaining the reason for the hike, said the department found it necessary to include the children in the water conservation and awareness drive.

He said, “Wingfield is our best producing water intake. It takes water from Old Road all the way to Basseterre and from Old Road all the way to Sandy Point and so we organized with primary school children from the 26 schools around the island and they were engaged in a tree planting exercise. Why? Because we want to get the youths involved in protecting and managing our water systems in a sustainable manner.”

According to Paul the hike also served as a learning opportunity for persons who use the water source.

“This was in general an education and a firsthand opportunity for residents who use the water to see how the water is treated, where it comes from and so that they could get a greater appreciation this most precious resource,” he said.

On Friday the Water Services Department also participated in an island-wide Watercade to raise awareness about water conservation.
