Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 5th, 2021 (ZIZ News) The fire department is urging everyone to be extra vigilant over the next few months as the dry season gets underway and the frequency of wildfires increases.
Acting Fire Chief Garfield Hodge told ZIZ News this is the time of year when the Fire Department sees an increase in wildfires or bush fires.
He said farmers, in particular, need to be careful of how they dispose of vegetation, as some methods can lead to wildfires.
Mr. Hodge said wildfires not only pose a danger to nearby residences and individuals but also put a strain on the Fire Department as resources have to be allocated to respond to the fires.
He said there are plans to launch a public awareness campaign to inform the public on the dangers of wildfires and how to prevent and respond to them.
