Women’s Day Activities

(ZIZ News) — The staff of the Department of Gender Affairs has begun preparations for events to commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8.

The activities were launched unofficially during a church service at the Sacred Heart Church in Sandy Point on Sunday.

Minister of State Responsible for Community Development, the Hon. Wendy Phipps said activities will focus on gender equality.

“We are trying to sensitize the global community and by extension our own communities here in St. Kitts and Nevis for the need towards having gender-based leadership that is inclusive of women, in terms of being balanced. Women and girls being able to achieve their full potential and also inclusiveness in the workplace in order to eliminate issues such as gender bias, which was demonstrated in terms of promotions, salary levels that are not equitable, etc,” she said.

The minister noted that among the activities is an awards ceremony at the St. Kitts Marriott Resort to honour women in various fields “and these women are being recognized for achievement in certain areas of endeavour including law enforcement, science and technology and so forth. Every year the groups might change a bit but the recognition is equally important nonetheless.”

The ceremony will be held on International Women’s Day, Tuesday March 8.
